How to Clean a Hob Filter?

Published in Appliance Maintenance 3 mins read

Cleaning your hob filter is essential for maintaining its effectiveness and ensuring proper ventilation in your kitchen. Here's how to do it:

Steps to Cleaning a Hob Filter

  1. Turn Off the Extractor Hob: Always start by ensuring the hob and extractor fan are completely switched off to prevent any electrical accidents.

  2. Remove the Grid and Filter Cage: Carefully remove the grid covering the filter. Then, lift out the filter cage from the hob.

  3. Remove Carbon Filters (if applicable): If your hob uses carbon filters, you'll usually find two of them inside the filter cage. Remove these filters.

  4. Clean the Filters: You have two options for cleaning the filters:

    • By Hand: Wash the filters in hot, soapy water. Use a brush to remove any stubborn grease or debris. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
    • In the Dishwasher: Some hob filters are dishwasher-safe. Check your hob's manual to confirm. If dishwasher-safe, place the filters in the dishwasher, ensuring they are not obstructed by other items.
  5. Drying the Filters:

    • Air Dry: Allow the filters to air dry completely before reassembling them.
    • Oven Regeneration (Carbon Filters): Some carbon filters can be regenerated in the oven. Check your hob's manual for specific instructions, as the temperature and duration will vary. Typically, this involves heating the filter at a low temperature (e.g., 100°C/212°F) for a specific period (e.g., 1-2 hours). Note: This is only for regenerating carbon filters, not for drying standard grease filters.
  6. Reassemble: Once the filters are completely dry (and regenerated, if applicable), place the carbon filters back into the filter cage (if applicable). Then, put the filter cage back into the hob and replace the grid.

Important Considerations:

  • Frequency: Clean your hob filter regularly, typically every 1-3 months, depending on how often you cook.
  • Filter Type: The cleaning process may vary slightly depending on the type of filter. Consult your hob's user manual for specific instructions.
  • Replacement: Carbon filters have a limited lifespan and will eventually need to be replaced. Check your hob's manual for replacement intervals.

By following these steps, you can keep your hob filter clean and maintain optimal performance.
