How are dryers powered?

Published in Appliance Power 1 min read

Dryers are powered either by electricity or gas, each requiring specific connections.

Electric Dryers

  • Electric dryers require a 240-volt electrical outlet. This outlet is larger than a standard outlet and has three or four holes. They need only this electrical connection.

Gas Dryers

  • Gas dryers need both a 120-volt standard electrical outlet and a capped-off gas line that connects to a gas inlet in the dryer. The gas line provides the heat for drying, while the electrical outlet powers the dryer's motor and controls.
Dryer Type Power Source(s) Outlet Requirement Additional Connections
Electric Electricity 240-volt electrical outlet (3 or 4 holes) None
Gas Gas and Electricity 120-volt standard electrical outlet Capped-off gas line

It's important to note the specific requirements for each type of dryer to ensure safe and effective operation.
