How to Add Activated Carbon to a Sponge Filter

Published in Aquarium Filtration 2 mins read

You can add activated carbon to a sponge filter by utilizing readily available carbon-infused media pads and attaching them directly to the sponge.

Adding activated carbon can help remove odors, discolorations, and certain chemical impurities from aquarium water. While sponge filters primarily offer mechanical and biological filtration, you can incorporate chemical filtration like activated carbon using compatible media.

Method Using Carbon-Infused Media Pads

The most practical way to add activated carbon to a standard sponge filter, which typically doesn't have compartments for loose media, is by using carbon-infused filter pads.

Fortunately, you can get carbon-infused media pads that are designed for aquarium filtration. While they are normally placed inside a filter's media compartment in other filter types, a clever adaptation allows you to use them with a sponge filter.

According to available methods, you can cut them down to size and wrap them around the sponge filter with a rubber band.

Steps for Attaching Carbon Pads:

  1. Obtain Carbon Pads: Purchase activated carbon-infused filter media pads from your local fish store or online retailer. These are typically flat sheets.
  2. Measure and Cut: Hold a section of the carbon pad against your sponge filter to estimate the required size. Cut the pad so it's large enough to wrap around the sponge without being overly bulky. You might need one or two pieces depending on the size of your sponge filter.
  3. Position the Pad: Place the cut carbon pad piece(s) around the exterior of the sponge filter.
  4. Secure with a Rubber Band: Use a fish-safe rubber band to gently secure the carbon pad(s) in place around the sponge filter. Ensure it's snug enough to stay put but not so tight it compresses the sponge excessively.

This method allows water flowing through the sponge filter to also pass through the carbon-infused pad, providing the chemical filtration benefit of activated carbon. Remember to replace the carbon pad regularly (usually every 2-4 weeks) as activated carbon becomes saturated and loses its effectiveness over time.
