How Do You Start Suction on an Aquarium Vacuum?

Published in Aquarium Maintenance 1 min read

To start suction on an aquarium vacuum using the mouth method, you'll need to use a siphon. Here's a straightforward breakdown of the process:

  1. Position the Siphon: Place one end of the siphon hose inside your aquarium.

  2. Apply Suction: According to the "Mouth Method," apply suction to the other end of the hose using your mouth until the tube fills with water.

  3. Seal the End: Once the tube is full of water, quickly cover the end you were using to create suction with your thumb to prevent the water from escaping.

  4. Initiate Flow: Place the thumb-covered end into a bucket positioned lower than the aquarium. Remove your thumb. The siphon should now begin to flow, creating the vacuum effect needed to clean your aquarium.
