How to Add Live Plants to an Established Aquarium?

Published in Aquarium Plants 2 mins read

To add live plants to an established aquarium, remove them from their packaging, prepare the roots, and carefully plant them in the substrate. They might experience some initial die-off as they adjust.

Here's a step-by-step guide to successfully adding live plants to your established aquarium:

  1. Remove the Plants from Packaging: Carefully take the new plants out of their pots or packaging.

  2. Prepare the Roots: Gently remove any rockwool or sponge material around the roots. This material can trap debris and hinder root growth. You can gently rinse the roots under dechlorinated water. Consider trimming the roots slightly if they are excessively long or tangled.

  3. Planting:

    • Individual Placement: If you want to spread the plants around, gently separate the plants.
    • Group Planting: Alternatively, you can keep the plants together for a denser display.
  4. Planting Technique: Use aquascaping tools or your fingers to create a small hole in the substrate (gravel or soil). Insert the roots carefully, ensuring they are well-covered but the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) is exposed. Avoid burying the crown, as this can cause rotting.

  5. Initial Adjustment: Expect a period of adjustment. The plants might experience some die-off as they adapt to the new environment. This is normal. Remove any dead or decaying leaves promptly to prevent water quality issues.
