How to Print on Bubble Wrap

Published in Art Technique 2 mins read

You can print on bubble wrap by applying paint to the bubble side and pressing it onto a surface to create a textured pattern. This technique is popular for creating unique visual effects in art and craft projects.

The Basic Process

Printing with bubble wrap is a simple yet effective method to add texture and interest to your artwork. The process involves treating the bubble wrap as a stamp.

  1. Prepare Your Materials:

    • Bubble wrap (any size bubbles work, different sizes create different effects)
    • Paint (like the poster paint mentioned in the reference)
    • Surface to print on (paper, fabric, canvas, etc.)
    • Paintbrush, roller, or sponge
  2. Apply the Paint:

    • Lay the bubble wrap flat with the bubbles facing upwards.
    • Apply an even layer of paint onto the surface of the bubbles. As noted in the reference, you can use paint such as poster paint.
    • Crucially: When applying the paint, you don't want to press too hard because you don't want the bubbles to pop. Gently cover the surface of the bubbles with paint.
  3. Make the Print:

    • Carefully lift the painted bubble wrap.
    • Position it over the surface you want to print on.
    • Press the bubble wrap down onto the surface. Apply even pressure across the entire piece of bubble wrap to transfer the paint from the bubbles.
    • Gently lift the bubble wrap away from the surface to reveal your print.

Tips for Bubble Wrap Printing

  • Experiment with different amounts of paint to see how it affects the print's clarity.
  • Try using multiple colors on the bubble wrap for a multi-colored effect.
  • Use different sizes of bubble wrap or cut it into shapes.
  • Clean the bubble wrap between uses if you want to switch colors or create clean prints.

This method is primarily used for creating texture and pattern in art projects, rather than for printing complex images or text like traditional printing presses would.
