How to Join Grass Mat?

Published in Artificial Grass Installation 3 mins read

To join grass mats, particularly artificial grass, you need to carefully prepare the edges and use a suitable joining method to create a seamless and durable connection. A crucial step, as highlighted in the reference, is to "make sure the seams match" and often involves "cutting off down this seam" to achieve a clean, straight edge for joining.

Preparing Your Grass Mats for Joining

Before you begin the joining process, proper preparation is key. This involves laying out the grass mats adjacent to each other where they will be joined.

  • Align Seams: Position the mats so the edges where they meet are perfectly aligned. As the reference notes, "Over you will see the seams. Run aord I.E you need to make sure the seams match". This ensures the pile of the grass runs in the same direction across the join, making the seam less visible.
  • Trim Edges: Often, the factory edge of artificial grass mats is not perfectly straight or may have excess backing material. To create a clean join, you may need to "cut off down this seam. All the way" along the edge of both pieces that will be joined. This ensures a tight, gap-free connection. Use a sharp utility knife and a straight edge for a clean cut.

The Joining Process

Once the edges are prepared and aligned, the actual joining takes place. The most common method for artificial grass involves using specialized joining tape and adhesive.

  1. Lay the Joining Tape: Place a strip of self-adhesive joining tape or separate tape designed for use with liquid adhesive underneath the aligned seam, centered directly under the join line.
  2. Apply Adhesive: If using tape that requires adhesive, apply a generous but even layer of specialist artificial grass adhesive onto the tape.
  3. Bring Edges Together: Carefully fold one edge of the grass mat back and then lay it down onto the adhesive or self-adhesive tape. Repeat with the other edge, pressing both edges firmly down onto the tape. Ensure the trimmed edges meet perfectly along the center of the tape.
  4. Secure the Join: Walk along the length of the seam, applying pressure to ensure good contact between the grass backing, the adhesive, and the joining tape. You can use a roller or even a flat piece of wood to press down firmly.

Tips for a Strong, Invisible Join

  • Use only products specifically designed for joining artificial grass.
  • Work in dry conditions.
  • Ensure the base material (like aggregate or concrete) beneath the join is stable and level.
  • Avoid getting adhesive on the grass fibers.
  • Allow the adhesive sufficient time to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions before walking on the seam.

By carefully aligning the seams and properly preparing the edges before using a suitable joining tape and adhesive, you can create a strong and visually appealing join for your grass mat installation.
