How Do You Melt Crayons Into Shapes?

Published in Arts & Crafts 2 mins read

You melt crayons into shapes by using heat, typically from an oven, to transform them from solid crayons into a molten state that can then be poured into molds to cool and solidify into new shapes.

Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Prepare the Crayons: Remove the paper wrappers from the crayons. Break the crayons into smaller pieces to help them melt more evenly. You can sort crayons by color to create solid-colored shapes or mix colors for a marbled effect.
  2. Prepare the Molds: Choose molds that are heat-safe. Silicone molds work well. Place the molds on a baking sheet for stability and easy handling.
  3. Fill the Molds: Place the broken crayon pieces into the molds. Distribute the crayon pieces evenly.
  4. Melt the Crayons:
    • Preheat your oven to a low temperature (around 200-250°F or 93-121°C).
    • Place the baking sheet with the molds in the oven.
    • Bake until the crayons are completely melted. This typically takes 10-20 minutes, but check frequently to avoid overheating or burning the crayons.
  5. Cool and Harden:
    • Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven (ask an adult for help, as the sheet will be hot).
    • Let the molds cool completely. You can speed up the process by placing the molds in the refrigerator or freezer.
  6. Remove from Molds: Once the crayons are fully hardened, gently push or peel them out of the molds.

You now have crayons in fun, new shapes! You can use them for drawing or give them away as gifts.
