How many solar systems are in our galaxy?

Published in Astronomy & Space 1 min read

Our galaxy contains potentially billions of solar systems, but only one is officially named "Solar System".

While it's difficult to give an exact number, here's what we know based on current astronomical observations and estimates:

  • Our Solar System is unique in name. According to the provided reference, "Our planetary system is the only one officially called “solar system,”
  • Astronomers have discovered thousands of other star systems. The reference mentions "astronomers have discovered more than 3,200 other stars with planets orbiting them in our galaxy."
  • The Milky Way galaxy likely contains many more undiscovered systems. Considering the vastness of the galaxy, the confirmed number is likely a small fraction of the total.

Therefore, while only our star system is called the "Solar System," the Milky Way galaxy is estimated to contain billions of planetary systems (stars with planets orbiting them).
