How Quickly Are We Moving?

Published in Astronomy 1 min read

Relative to the local standard of rest, the Earth is moving at approximately 43,000 miles per hour (70,000 km/hr).

This significant speed represents our solar system's motion within the Milky Way galaxy. This isn't unusual for stars in our galactic neighborhood. Think of it as our "milling around" speed in our part of the galaxy's suburbs. We are headed roughly in the direction of the bright star Vega, located in the constellation Lyra.

In summary, while we perceive ourselves as stationary on Earth, we are actually hurtling through space at a considerable velocity.
