How do I hard reset my ASUS laptop?

Published in ASUS Laptop Troubleshooting 2 mins read

A hard reset, or more accurately a hard restart, on your ASUS laptop forces a shutdown and can resolve some software issues. Here's how to perform one:

Steps for a Hard Restart

Follow these steps to perform a hard restart on your ASUS laptop:

  1. Power Down: Press and hold the Power button until the laptop completely shuts down. This might take several seconds.

  2. Disconnect Peripherals: Disconnect all connected devices such as:

    • External hard drives
    • USB drives
    • Printers
    • Any other accessories
  3. Remove Power Cable: Unplug the power adapter from your ASUS laptop.

  4. Remove Battery (If Applicable):

    • If your laptop has a removable battery, detach it.
    • Not all ASUS laptops have removable batteries.
  5. Dissipate Residual Power: Press and hold the Power button for 15–20 seconds. This step helps to discharge any remaining electrical charge in the system.

  6. Reconnect (Battery and Power):

    • If you removed the battery, reinsert it.
    • Plug the power adapter back into the laptop.
  7. Power On: Press the Power button again to turn on your ASUS laptop.

When to Use a Hard Restart

A hard restart can be helpful in situations like:

  • Your laptop is frozen or unresponsive.
  • You're experiencing persistent software glitches.
  • As a troubleshooting step before seeking more advanced solutions.

Important Note: A hard restart is different from a factory reset. A factory reset will erase your data, while a hard restart simply forces the laptop to power off and back on.
