The mesosphere is the coldest layer of Earth's atmosphere. Temperatures in the mesosphere can reach as low as -173°C (-279°F). This is because the mesosphere receives very little heat from the sun and has very little air to absorb heat from the ground.
The mesosphere is located between the stratosphere and the thermosphere, extending from about 50 to 85 kilometers (31 to 53 miles) above Earth's surface. It is a challenging layer to study due to its altitude and lack of significant atmospheric density.
