The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere, extending from the surface up to about 7-15 kilometers. It is essential for life on Earth for several reasons:
- We breathe the air in this layer: The troposphere contains the air we breathe, which is composed primarily of nitrogen and oxygen.
- Weather occurs here: All weather phenomena, including clouds, rain, snow, and storms, take place within the troposphere.
- It contains most of the atmosphere's mass: The troposphere contains about 85% of the atmosphere's total mass, making it the densest layer.
- It regulates Earth's temperature: The troposphere is where the greenhouse effect occurs, which helps to maintain Earth's temperature at a level suitable for life.
Without the troposphere, life on Earth as we know it would not be possible.
