Auroras, such as the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) and Aurora Australis (Southern Lights), are found in the thermosphere. This is one of the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere. Solar particles trapped within the thermosphere interact with gases like nitrogen and oxygen, creating the colorful displays of light we know as auroras.
