How Do You Level Paint Chips?

Published in Auto Body Repair 3 mins read

To level paint chips, you'll want to carefully apply touch-up paint and then smooth it to be flush with the surrounding surface. Here's how:

  1. Apply Touch-Up Paint: Using a fine-tipped applicator (like an Ultrabrush or even a toothpick for very small chips), carefully dab touch-up paint into the chip. Avoid applying too much at once. It's better to build up layers.

  2. Leveling Techniques: After applying the paint, you have a few options for leveling:

    • Gloved Finger/Thumb Swipe: Lightly swipe the paint across the chip using the flat side of your gloved thumb or finger. Do not press down hard, as this can force the paint out of the chip. The goal is to gently spread the paint and fill the chip. This technique is best for small chips.
    • Squeegee/Leveling Tool: A small squeegee or specialized leveling tool can also be used to carefully spread the paint and level it with the surrounding area. Again, use a very light touch.
    • Ultrabrush: The Ultrabrush can be used to level the paint as you apply it, by lightly dragging it across the surface.
  3. Multiple Coats: Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next. It may take several thin coats to fill the chip and achieve the desired level. Proper drying time is critical for good results.

  4. Wet Sanding (Optional): Once the final coat is completely dry (usually after several days), you may be able to carefully wet sand the area with very fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 2000-grit or higher) to further level the touch-up paint. This is an advanced technique and should only be attempted if you are comfortable with the process. Proceed with extreme caution. Then polish.

Important Considerations:

  • Cleanliness: Ensure the chip and surrounding area are clean and free of any debris or wax before applying touch-up paint. Use a wax and grease remover for best results.
  • Color Matching: Ensure the touch-up paint perfectly matches your car's paint color. Use your car's paint code to find the correct match.
  • Clear Coat: If your car has a clear coat, you may need to apply a clear coat touch-up pen or spray after the color coat has dried and been leveled.

By following these steps, you can effectively level paint chips and restore your car's finish.
