How do you put on an oil filter?

Published in Auto Maintenance 2 mins read

To put on a new oil filter, first, you need to ensure that the oil filter is properly seated. This is done by hand tightening the new oil filter until it makes contact with the oil filter housing. Once it is making contact, you can give it an additional ¼ to ½ turn to ensure that it is securely tightened. This should be enough to seal the filter without over-tightening it.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • Lubricate the O-ring: Before installing the new filter, apply a thin layer of clean engine oil to the rubber O-ring located on the filter. This helps ensure a good seal and prevents leaks.
  • Avoid over-tightening: Over-tightening can damage the oil filter housing and make it difficult to remove the filter during the next oil change.
  • Use a filter wrench: If you are having trouble removing the old oil filter, you can use a filter wrench to loosen it.
  • Check for leaks: After installing the new filter, check for any leaks around the base of the filter. If there are any leaks, tighten the filter slightly more, but be careful not to over-tighten it.

Remember: Consult your owner's manual for specific instructions on oil filter installation for your vehicle.
