How to Change Selection Settings in AutoCAD?

Published in AutoCAD Customization 2 mins read

To change selection settings in AutoCAD, access the Options dialog box and adjust the parameters on the Selection tab. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Open the Options Dialog Box: Right-click anywhere within the drawing area and select "Options" from the context menu.

  2. Navigate to the Selection Tab: In the Options dialog box, click on the "Selection" tab.

  3. Adjust Selection Settings: The Selection tab contains various settings that control how objects are selected in AutoCAD. Some key settings include:

    • Selection Preview: Enable or disable the highlighting of objects as your cursor moves over them, providing a preview of what will be selected. You can control whether this preview applies when a command is active ("When command active") or always ("When no command active").

    • Highlighting: Control whether selected objects are highlighted. This visual cue confirms that an object has been successfully selected. You can also configure the highlight color.

    • Pickbox Size: Adjust the size of the pickbox (the small square cursor used for object selection). A larger pickbox makes it easier to select objects, especially small or closely spaced ones.

    • Grip Size: Adjust the size of the grips that appear when an object is selected. Larger grips are easier to see and manipulate.

    • Object Sort Method: Determines the order in which overlapping objects are selected.

    • Implied Windowing: This option controls how AutoCAD interprets a selection window when you click and drag. If enabled, dragging from left to right creates a "window" selection (selects objects entirely within the rectangle), while dragging from right to left creates a "crossing" selection (selects objects within or crossing the rectangle).

  4. Apply Changes: After adjusting the settings to your preferences, click "Apply" and then "OK" to save the changes and close the Options dialog box.

By adjusting these selection settings, you can customize AutoCAD to better suit your workflow and improve your efficiency when selecting objects in your drawings. Experiment with different settings to find what works best for you.
