How Do I Edit a Locked AutoCAD File?

Published in AutoCAD Editing 2 mins read

To edit a locked AutoCAD file object embedded in another application, you'll typically unlock it by adjusting its properties within that application.

Here's how to unlock the AutoCAD drawing object:

  1. Deselect Existing Selections: Click an empty space on the diagram (or within the application where the AutoCAD file is embedded) to ensure nothing is currently selected.
  2. Access Properties: Right-click on the AutoCAD drawing object itself.
  3. Select "CAD Drawing Object Properties": From the context menu, choose the option that says "CAD Drawing Object Properties."
  4. Unlock Size and Position: In the properties window that appears, look for a checkbox labeled "Lock size and position." Click this checkbox to deselect it. This allows you to resize and move the object.
  5. Unlock Against Deletion: Also in the properties window, look for a checkbox labeled "Lock against deletion." Click this checkbox to deselect it. This allows you to delete the object.

By deselecting these checkboxes, you've essentially unlocked the AutoCAD object, allowing you to edit its size, position, and delete it, depending on the application you are using. Note that this process unlocks the object within the host application, not the original AutoCAD file itself. To modify the contents of the AutoCAD file, you need to open it directly in AutoCAD (if you have editing permissions).
