How to Edit a Layout in AutoCAD?

Published in AutoCAD Layout Editing 3 mins read

Learn how to edit your AutoCAD layout settings, particularly focusing on the Page Setup, by using the steps provided below.

The primary way to modify key properties of a specific layout, such as the printer, paper size, or plot scale, is through the Page Setup Manager.

Steps to Edit a Layout's Page Setup

Editing the page setup for a layout is a fundamental task in preparing your drawings for plotting or publishing. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Navigate to the layout tab you wish to edit. The layout tabs are typically located at the bottom of the drawing window.

  2. Right-click its title (layout name). This will open a context menu with various options related to the layout.

  3. From the context menu, choose Page Setup Manager.

    • The Page Setup Manager dialog box will appear.
    • The name of the current layout will be automatically selected in the list within this dialog.
  4. With the desired layout selected, Click the Modify... button.

    • This action opens the Page Setup dialog box specifically for the chosen layout.
  5. In the Page Setup dialog box, you can now adjust numerous settings.

What You Can Modify in Page Setup

The Page Setup dialog box allows you to control various plotting and page properties for the selected layout. Common settings you can edit include:

  • Printer/Plotter: Select the output device.
  • Paper Size: Define the sheet size for the layout.
  • Plot Area: Specify what part of the layout to plot (Layout, Extents, Display, Window).
  • Plot Scale: Set the scale at which the layout content will be plotted (e.g., 1:1 for paper space).
  • Plot Offset: Adjust the origin of the plot on the paper.
  • Plot Style Table (Pen Assignments): Assign CTB or STB files to control line weights, colors, etc.
  • Shaded Viewport Options: Control how 3D viewports are plotted.
  • Plot Options: Include plot transparency, plot with plot styles, plot paper space last, hide objects.

After making your desired changes in the Page Setup dialog box, click OK to save them and then Close the Page Setup Manager.

While the Page Setup Manager focuses on plotting properties, "editing a layout" can also encompass modifying objects within the layout itself, such as viewports, title blocks, dimensions, text, or other drawing elements. However, accessing the Page Setup Manager via right-clicking the layout tab name is the standard method for configuring the foundational plot settings of that specific layout.
