How do I change the insertion scale in AutoCAD?

Published in AutoCAD Units 2 mins read

You can change the insertion scale in AutoCAD through the Drawing Units dialog box. Here's how:

  1. Access Drawing Utilities: Go to the Application Menu (the AutoCAD icon at the top-left of the screen), then navigate to Drawing Utilities > Units. Alternatively, type UNITS in the command line and press Enter.

  2. Locate Insertion Units: In the Drawing Units dialog box, find the "Insertion scale" group (sometimes labeled "Units to scale inserted content").

  3. Choose the Desired Units: Use the drop-down menu within the Insertion Units group to select the appropriate units for your drawing. This setting tells AutoCAD how to scale blocks and drawings when they are inserted into the current drawing. For example, if your drawing units are meters and you insert a block that was created in millimeters, AutoCAD will scale the block accordingly.

Important Considerations:

  • Consistency is Key: Ensure the insertion scale is consistent with your intended drawing units to avoid scaling issues.
  • Source Drawing Units: Be aware of the units used in the source drawing when inserting blocks or external references (Xrefs). If the source drawing has its units set incorrectly, you may need to adjust the insertion scale accordingly.
  • Unitless Blocks: If a block was created without specified units (set to "Unitless"), AutoCAD will treat it as if it were created using the current drawing's units.

By correctly setting the insertion scale, you ensure that inserted content is properly scaled to match the dimensions of your current drawing.
