Why Differences in Wheel Speed are Necessary When Turning

When a vehicle turns, the wheels on the outside of the turn must travel a greater distance than the wheels on the inside. Imagine drawing two concentric circles for the paths of the left and right wheels during a turn; the outer circle is always larger.

  • Outer Wheel: Travels a longer distance, needs to rotate faster.
  • Inner Wheel: Travels a shorter distance, needs to rotate slower.

If the wheels were rigidly connected to the axle (like on a go-kart or some older agricultural machinery), one wheel would have to slip or drag when turning. This makes steering difficult, causes excessive tire wear, and puts significant stress on the drivetrain components.

The Differential's Ingenious Solution

  4. Gear Action: The gears inside the differential (the spider gears) begin to rotate on their own axes. This rotation allows the side gear connected to the outer wheel axle to spin faster than the carrier's rotation, while the side gear connected to the inner wheel axle spins slower than the carrier's rotation.

Speed Management: The differential effectively sends more rotational speed to the outer wheel and less to the inner wheel, precisely matching the speed requirements dictated by the turning radius. Crucially, power continues to be transferred to both wheels, although in a standard open differential, the wheel with the least resistance (the inner wheel during a turn, or a wheel on ice) receives the majority of the power.
