How Do You Drain Oil?

Published in Automotive Maintenance 3 mins read

Draining oil involves removing the old oil from an engine to replace it with fresh oil. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Gather your supplies: You'll need a wrench or socket (typically a box-end wrench or 6-point socket) to loosen the drain plug, an oil catch pan, new oil, a new oil filter (recommended), a funnel, and rags or paper towels.
  2. Warm up the engine: Run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil. Warm oil flows more easily. Important: Don't run it too long, as hot oil can burn you.
  3. Locate the drain plug: The drain plug is typically located on the bottom of the oil pan. Consult your vehicle's service manual if you're unsure of its location.
  4. Position the catch pan: Place the oil catch pan directly beneath the drain plug.
  5. Loosen the drain plug: Use the correct size wrench or socket to carefully loosen the drain plug. It may be tight.
  6. Remove the drain plug: Once loosened, carefully remove the drain plug by hand, making sure the catch pan is properly positioned to catch the oil. Be prepared for the oil to flow quickly!
  7. Allow the oil to drain completely: Let the old oil drain completely from the engine. This can take several minutes.
  8. Replace the drain plug: Once the oil has finished draining, clean the drain plug (and replace the crush washer if necessary). Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque (check your service manual). Do not overtighten!
  9. Replace the oil filter: (Optional but highly recommended) While the oil is draining, replace the oil filter. Refer to your vehicle's service manual for instructions.
  10. Add new oil: Using a funnel, add the correct amount of new oil to the engine. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for the correct oil type and capacity.
  11. Check the oil level: Use the dipstick to check the oil level. Add more oil if needed to reach the "full" mark.
  12. Start the engine and check for leaks: Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for leaks around the drain plug and oil filter.
  13. Dispose of the old oil properly: Take the used oil to a recycling center or auto parts store for proper disposal. Never pour used oil down a drain or onto the ground.
