How Do You Grease a Release Bearing?

Published in Automotive Maintenance 2 mins read

Greasing a release bearing, also known as a throw-out bearing, involves carefully applying the correct type of grease to ensure smooth clutch operation. Here's how to do it properly:

  1. Use the Right Grease and Tool: Employ a low-pressure-type grease gun. The grease should be a high-quality, high-temperature grease specifically recommended for release bearings (often a lithium-based grease).

  2. Locate the Grease Fitting: The release bearing may have a grease fitting (zerk fitting) accessible from outside the transmission bellhousing. If there's no external fitting, the bearing might need to be accessed during clutch replacement for manual greasing. Some bearings are pre-lubricated and sealed and require no additional greasing.

  3. Apply Grease Carefully: Connect the grease gun to the fitting. Lubricate the bearing slowly and steadily.

  4. Avoid Over-Lubrication: Continue greasing until excess grease purges from the rear of the release bearing, which is the side facing toward the transmission. Do not over-lubricate. Over-greasing can contaminate the clutch disc, leading to slippage and performance issues.

  5. Clean Up Excess Grease: Wipe away any excess grease that may have purged from the bearing to prevent it from contaminating the clutch.

Important Considerations:

  • Accessibility: Access to the release bearing for greasing varies depending on the vehicle. Some vehicles require removing the transmission.
  • Bearing Type: Some modern release bearings are sealed and do not require or allow greasing. Attempting to grease a sealed bearing can damage it.
  • Professional Assistance: If you are unsure about the procedure or access to the bearing, it's best to consult a qualified mechanic.
  • Grease Compatibility: Using the wrong type of grease can cause premature wear and failure of the release bearing. Always refer to the vehicle's service manual or a trusted mechanic for recommendations.
