How do you oil wheel bearings?

Published in Automotive Maintenance 3 mins read

Wheel bearings are typically greased, not oiled. While oil can lubricate, grease is thicker and adheres better, providing longer-lasting protection against friction, heat, and contaminants in the demanding environment of a wheel bearing.

Here's how to properly grease wheel bearings:

Tools You'll Need:

  • Wheel bearing grease (high-quality, suitable for automotive use)
  • Grease packer tool (optional, but highly recommended)
  • Gloves
  • Clean rags
  • Safety glasses

Steps for Greasing Wheel Bearings:

  1. Remove the Wheel Bearings: Access the wheel bearings by removing the wheel, brake caliper (if necessary), hub, and other related components. Consult your vehicle's repair manual for specific instructions. Always follow proper safety precautions when working on your vehicle.

  2. Clean the Bearings: Thoroughly clean the old grease from the bearings and races using a parts cleaner or solvent. Ensure they are completely dry before proceeding. Inspect the bearings for any signs of damage (pitting, discoloration, excessive wear). Replace the bearings if damage is found.

  3. Grease the Bearings: There are two main methods for greasing wheel bearings:

    • Using a Grease Packer Tool:

      1. Clamp the bearing into the grease packer tool.
      2. Attach a grease gun to the tool.
      3. Pump grease into the bearing until fresh grease is forced through all the rollers and the bearing is completely full.
    • By Hand (Palm Packing):

      1. Place a generous amount of grease in the palm of your gloved hand.
      2. Press the wide end of the bearing into the grease.
      3. Use your other hand to force the grease into the bearing, working it into all the nooks and crannies. Continue until grease is visible on the opposite side of the bearing and the bearing is completely packed.
  4. Grease the Races: Apply a thin layer of grease to the bearing races (the cups) that are pressed into the hub.

  5. Reassemble: Reinstall the wheel bearings, hub, and other components in the reverse order of removal. Follow your vehicle's repair manual for proper torque specifications.

Important Considerations:

  • Type of Grease: Use a high-quality wheel bearing grease specifically formulated for automotive applications. Synthetic greases often offer superior performance.
  • Don't Over-Grease: While it's essential to pack the bearings fully, over-greasing can lead to excessive heat buildup.
  • Proper Torque: Ensure you tighten the wheel bearing adjusting nut (if applicable) to the correct torque specification. Over-tightening can damage the bearings.
  • Follow your Vehicle's Manual: Always consult your vehicle's repair manual for specific instructions and torque specifications related to wheel bearing service.

By following these steps, you can properly grease your wheel bearings, ensuring smooth and reliable operation for your vehicle.
