How to Change Engine Oil and Filter?

Published in Automotive Maintenance 4 mins read

Changing your engine oil and filter is a crucial maintenance task that can extend the life of your vehicle. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

Before You Begin:

  • Safety First: Always work in a well-ventilated area. Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from hot oil and chemicals.
  • Gather Your Supplies: You'll need new engine oil (correct type and amount for your vehicle, check your owner's manual), a new oil filter (correct type for your vehicle), an oil filter wrench, a wrench for the oil drain plug, an oil drain pan, a funnel, and rags or paper towels.
  • Warm Up the Engine (Slightly): Run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil, making it flow more easily. Do not overheat the engine, as hot oil can cause burns.

Steps to Change Your Oil and Filter:

Step 1: Lift The Vehicle

  • Park your car on a level surface.
  • Engage the parking brake.
  • Use a jack to lift the vehicle and securely support it with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.

Step 2: Locate Your Oil Pan And Drain The Old Oil

  • Locate the oil pan underneath the engine. It's typically a large, metal pan at the bottom of the engine.
  • Position the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug.
  • Using the correct wrench, carefully loosen and remove the drain plug. Let the old oil drain completely. This may take 15-30 minutes.
  • Once the oil has stopped draining, inspect the drain plug and replace the crush washer if necessary.
  • Clean the drain plug and reinstall it, tightening it to the manufacturer's specified torque (check your service manual). Do not overtighten.

Step 3: Replace The Oil Filter

  • Locate the oil filter. It's usually a cylindrical canister screwed onto the engine block.
  • Place a rag or paper towels under the oil filter to catch any spills.
  • Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old oil filter.
  • Lightly lubricate the rubber gasket on the new oil filter with fresh engine oil.
  • Screw the new oil filter onto the engine by hand until the gasket makes contact, then tighten it another 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn as per the filter instructions (usually printed on the filter). Do not overtighten.

Step 4: Lower Your Car And Add The New Oil

  • Carefully lower the vehicle.
  • Locate the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
  • Remove the oil fill cap and insert a funnel.
  • Pour the correct amount of new engine oil into the engine, as specified in your owner's manual.
  • Replace the oil fill cap.

Step 5: Check Your Oil Levels

  • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
  • Check for any leaks around the oil drain plug and oil filter.
  • Turn off the engine and let it sit for a few minutes.
  • Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, and then remove it again to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the "min" and "max" marks on the dipstick. Add more oil if necessary.
  • Dispose of the used oil and filter properly at a recycling center or auto parts store.

Important Considerations:

  • Owner's Manual: Always refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions, oil type, oil filter part number, and oil capacity.
  • Torque Specifications: Use a torque wrench to tighten the drain plug and oil filter to the manufacturer's specified torque.
  • Proper Disposal: Dispose of used oil and filters responsibly. Most auto parts stores and recycling centers accept used oil for recycling.

By following these steps, you can successfully change your engine oil and filter, contributing to the longevity and performance of your vehicle.
