Giving your baby a head bath is easier than you might think! Follow these simple steps for a safe and gentle experience.
Preparing for the Bath
- Gather your supplies: You'll need a small basin or sink, lukewarm water, a soft washcloth, baby shampoo (specifically formulated for babies), and a towel.
- Check the water temperature: Ensure the water is comfortably lukewarm—test it on your inner wrist before placing your baby in. Too hot or too cold water can be uncomfortable and even harmful.
- Support your baby: Have a firm, supportive surface ready. A changing table or a clean, flat surface works well.
Washing Your Baby's Hair
- Support your baby's head and neck: Gently cradle your baby's head and neck with one hand, providing firm but gentle support.
- Wet the hair: Use a soft cup or the washcloth to gently wet your baby's hair with lukewarm water. Avoid splashing water in their face.
- Apply shampoo: Use a tiny amount of baby shampoo—a dime-sized amount is usually sufficient. Gently massage the shampoo into their scalp and hair, being mindful of the soft spots on their head. Avoid getting shampoo in their eyes.
- Rinse thoroughly: Use the cup or a soft washcloth to gently rinse all the shampoo from your baby's hair. Make sure there's no residue left.
- Dry gently: Wrap your baby in a soft towel and gently pat their hair dry. Avoid rubbing, which can irritate their delicate skin.
Important Considerations
- Soft spots: Be gentle when washing around the soft spots (fontanelles) on your baby's head. These areas are naturally soft and vulnerable.
- Eye protection: Always take precautions to prevent shampoo from getting into your baby's eyes. If it does happen, rinse immediately with clean water.
- Frequency: You don't need to wash your baby's hair every day. A few times a week is usually sufficient, unless they've gotten particularly dirty.
Wash your baby's scalp and hair. Use your other hand to wash the hair with a small amount of baby shampoo. Massage their entire scalp gently, including the area over their soft spots. Rinse completely. Use caution so the soap does not get into the eyes.
