How to Give a Newborn a Sponge Bath?

Published in Baby Care 4 mins read

Here's how to give a newborn a sponge bath, keeping them clean and comfortable until they're ready for a full bath:

Supplies You'll Need:

  • A soft, clean washcloth
  • A clean towel
  • A bowl of warm water (test the temperature on your wrist to ensure it's not too hot)
  • Mild, unscented baby soap (optional, and only use if needed)
  • A clean diaper
  • Clean clothes

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Prepare the Area: Choose a safe, flat surface like a changing table or bed. Cover it with a clean towel. Gather all your supplies within easy reach.

  2. Undress Your Baby: Remove your baby's clothes, leaving the diaper on initially. Wrap them in a towel to keep them warm.

  3. Wash the Face: Dip the washcloth in the warm water and wring out the excess. Gently wipe your baby's face, starting with the eyes. Use a clean corner of the washcloth for each eye, wiping from the inner corner to the outer corner.

  4. Clean the Rest of the Head: Use the damp washcloth to gently wipe your baby's forehead, cheeks, and around their ears. Avoid putting water directly into the ears.

  5. Wash the Neck and Skin Folds: Babies often accumulate milk and moisture in the folds of their neck. Gently lift the chin and clean these areas thoroughly with the damp washcloth. Remember to dry these areas well.

  6. Wash the Arms and Torso: Unwrap the towel to expose one arm and gently wash it with the damp washcloth. Pay attention to the armpits. Dry the arm thoroughly and rewrap it. Repeat on the other arm. Then, wash the baby’s chest and stomach, drying well afterward.

  7. Clean the Genital Area: Remove the diaper. For girls, wipe from front to back to prevent infections. For boys, gently clean the penis, avoiding pulling back the foreskin (if uncircumcised). Clean the genital area with a fresh part of the washcloth.

  8. Wash the Legs and Feet: Wash each leg and foot, paying attention to the areas between the toes. Dry thoroughly.

  9. Turn Your Baby Over (Carefully): Support your baby securely while turning them onto their tummy.

  10. Wash the Back and Buttocks: Gently wash your baby's back and buttocks with the damp washcloth.

  11. Dry Thoroughly: Use a soft, dry towel to pat your baby completely dry, paying special attention to skin folds.

  12. Apply Lotion (Optional): If your baby has dry skin, you can apply a small amount of unscented baby lotion.

  13. Diaper and Dress Your Baby: Put on a clean diaper and dress your baby in clean clothes.

Important Considerations:

  • Keep Baby Warm: Ensure the room is warm to prevent your baby from getting cold. Keep your baby wrapped in a towel as much as possible during the bath.
  • Safety First: Never leave your baby unattended during a sponge bath.
  • Frequency: Sponge baths are typically recommended until the umbilical cord stump falls off. After that, you can start giving your baby full baths 2-3 times a week.
  • Umbilical Cord Care: Keep the umbilical cord stump dry. If it gets dirty, gently clean it with a damp cotton swab. Consult your pediatrician if you notice any signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus, or foul odor).
  • Observe Baby’s Skin: If you notice any rashes, dryness, or other skin problems, consult your pediatrician.
