What is Suctioning a Baby?

Published in Baby Care 1 min read

Suctioning a baby is the process of removing mucus from the baby's mouth or nose, typically using a bulb syringe. This helps the baby breathe easier, especially when congested.

Why is Suctioning Necessary?

A stuffy nose can make it difficult for a baby to breathe, leading to fussiness, especially during feeding or sleep. Suctioning helps clear the nasal passages, making breathing and eating easier.

How is Suctioning Performed?

A bulb syringe is the common tool used. Here’s a simple breakdown:

  1. Squeeze the bulb of the syringe to create suction.
  2. Gently insert the tip of the syringe into the baby's nostril or mouth.
  3. Release the bulb slowly to suction out the mucus.
  4. Remove the syringe and squeeze the bulb to expel the mucus onto a tissue.
  5. Repeat as necessary, alternating nostrils.

Benefits of Suctioning

  • Improved breathing
  • Easier feeding
  • Better sleep
  • Reduced fussiness
