A baby can generally start eating small portions of food similar to what adults eat around 12 months old.
After 12 months, toddlers are capable of eating food similar to adults:
- At 12 months, your toddler's digestive system is ready to accept small portions of food similar to what adults eat.
- Ensure that meals are balanced amongst all four food groups (fruits, vegetables, grains, meat and alternatives) and prepared with minimal salt, sugar or seasoning.
It is important to ensure the food is appropriately prepared:
- Cut into small, manageable pieces: Reduces the risk of choking.
- Cooked until soft: Makes it easier for the baby to chew and digest.
- Minimal salt, sugar, and seasoning: Protects the baby's kidneys and avoids developing a preference for overly seasoned food.
