What Water to Use for Formula?

Published in Baby Formula 3 mins read

You can use clean tap water or bottled water when preparing formula for your baby. However, there are a few important things to keep in mind to ensure the water is safe and appropriate.

Types of Water Safe for Formula

  • Tap Water: If your tap water is safe to drink, it's generally fine to use for formula. Before using tap water, let it run for a minute to flush out any lead that may be present in your plumbing, especially if your home has older pipes. It's also advisable to contact your local water supplier to inquire about lead testing.
  • Bottled Water: Bottled water is a suitable alternative, especially when you're unsure about the quality of tap water. Look for bottled water that is purified or distilled.
  • Sterilized Water: Whether you are using tap water or bottled water, it is recommended to boil the water first and then let it cool before mixing the formula, especially for babies under 3 months, premature babies, or those with weakened immune systems. Bring the water to a rolling boil for one minute, then let it cool to lukewarm (around 70°C or 158°F) before adding the formula powder. Allow it to cool further before feeding.

Important Considerations

  • Lead Contamination: Lead in water can be harmful, especially to infants. If you're concerned about lead in your tap water, have it tested. If lead levels are high, use bottled water instead. Discuss your concerns and lead testing for your child with your healthcare provider.
  • Fluoride: Some bottled water contains fluoride. While fluoride is beneficial for dental health, excessive intake can lead to fluorosis (discoloration of teeth). To avoid overexposure, alternate between fluoridated and non-fluoridated water sources. Your pediatrician can provide guidance based on your child's age and fluoride needs.
  • Water Softeners: Water softened by a water softener system may contain elevated levels of sodium. Avoid using softened water for formula, as high sodium intake can be harmful to infants.

Steps for Preparing Formula Safely

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  2. Boil the water (if needed).
  3. Let the water cool to lukewarm (around 70°C or 158°F).
  4. Pour the correct amount of water into a clean bottle.
  5. Add the correct amount of formula powder, following the manufacturer's instructions precisely.
  6. Secure the nipple and cap and shake well until the powder is dissolved.
  7. Test the temperature of the formula on your wrist before feeding. It should feel lukewarm, not hot.
  8. Use prepared formula within one hour of preparation, and discard any unused formula after feeding.
