How Can I Stop My Baby From Losing Her Hair?

Published in Baby Hair Care 2 mins read

Unfortunately, you usually can't completely stop your baby from losing their hair, as some hair loss is a normal part of infant development. Here's why and what you can do:

Understanding Newborn Hair Loss

Most hair loss in newborns is related to two main factors:

  • Hormonal Changes: Just like during pregnancy, your baby experiences significant hormonal shifts after birth. These hormonal changes often lead to hair loss, similar to postpartum hair loss in mothers. This type of hair loss is temporary and will resolve on its own. Think of it as the old hair making way for new, permanent hair. There is nothing you can do to prevent this type of hair loss; you simply have to wait it out.

  • Friction: Babies spend a lot of time lying on their backs, which can cause friction and hair loss on the back of their heads.

What You Can Do to Minimize Hair Loss from Friction

While hormonal hair loss is unavoidable, you can minimize hair loss caused by friction:

  • Alternate Sleeping Positions: If your baby always sleeps with their head turned to one side, gently alternate which side they face during naps and at night.

  • Tummy Time: Increase tummy time when your baby is awake and supervised. This takes pressure off the back of their head.

  • Varying Positions: During awake time, use a carrier or hold your baby upright to give the back of their head a break.

What to Watch For:

While most baby hair loss is normal, consult with your pediatrician if you notice:

  • Hair loss accompanied by a rash or other skin changes.
  • Uneven or patchy hair loss that doesn't seem related to sleeping position.
  • Concerns about your baby's overall development.

In most cases, newborn hair loss is a temporary phase. Focus on providing a comfortable environment for your baby, and look forward to their new head of hair!
