How Do You Get Air Out of a Bag?

Published in Bag Handling 2 mins read

You can remove air from a bag using several methods, but one effective technique uses water displacement.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Partially Seal the Bag: Leave a small opening in the bag's seal. This allows air to escape.
  2. Submerge in Water: Slowly lower the bag into a container of water (a pot or tub works well).
  3. Observe Air Escape: As you submerge the bag, the water pressure will force the air out through the small opening.
  4. Seal and Remove: Just before the bag is fully submerged, completely seal the opening.
  5. Pull Out: Remove the sealed bag from the water.

This method effectively removes air because water pressure is consistently applied to the bag, pushing air out through the designated opening until it's almost entirely gone.

There are other methods to remove air from a bag as well, such as:

  • Vacuum Sealing: If you have a vacuum sealer, this is the most efficient way to remove air. These devices suck the air out of the bag before sealing it shut.
  • Manual Squeezing: Gently squeeze the bag to force air out before sealing it. While less effective than other methods, it can reduce the amount of air inside.
  • Rolling: Place the item flat on the bag and begin rolling the bag tightly, pushing air out the opening before sealing.

No matter which method you choose, the goal is to reduce the amount of air inside the bag, which can help preserve the contents, reduce bulk, and prevent freezer burn.
