How Do You Use an Icing Bag Coupler?

Published in Baking Techniques 2 mins read

Using an icing bag coupler allows you to easily switch piping tips on the same icing bag without having to change the entire bag. Here's how to use one:

  1. Prepare the Icing Bag: Take your icing bag and insert the coupler base (the wider part) into the narrowest part of the bag.

  2. Mark and Cut the Bag: Push the coupler base down into the bag until the end of the screw threads are visible through the bag. Use your finger to mark this spot on the outside of the bag. Remove the coupler base. Using scissors, cut the tip of the bag off at the marked spot. You want the hole to be large enough for the coupler base to poke through, but not so large that the coupler slips out.

  3. Insert the Coupler Base: Place the coupler base back into the bag, pushing it through the hole you just created. The threads of the coupler should be sticking out.

  4. Attach the Piping Tip: Choose the piping tip you want to use and place it over the coupler base, on the outside of the bag.

  5. Secure with the Coupler Ring: Screw the coupler ring (the smaller, screw-on piece) over the piping tip and onto the coupler base. Tighten it until the piping tip is securely attached.

  6. Fill and Use: Fill the icing bag with your desired icing. Twist the open end of the bag to create pressure and begin piping.

  7. Switching Tips: To change tips, simply unscrew the coupler ring, remove the current tip, attach a new tip, and screw the ring back on.
