Which daily activity can improve your balance?

Published in Balance Improvement 2 mins read

Standing up and sitting down from a chair without using your hands is one daily activity that can improve your balance.

Here's why and some other activities that contribute:

  • Chair Stands: Repeatedly standing up and sitting down from a chair (without using your hands for support) strengthens leg muscles, core muscles, and improves proprioception (your body's awareness of its position in space). This directly translates to better balance.

  • Walking with Knee Lifts: Incorporating knee lifts into your daily walk challenges your balance. Bring each knee up towards your chest as you walk, alternating legs. This forces you to engage your core and balance muscles more actively.

  • Tai Chi and Yoga: These practices emphasize slow, controlled movements and mindfulness, which are excellent for improving balance, flexibility, and coordination. Many poses and forms require you to shift your weight and maintain stability.

  • Balance Board Exercises: Using equipment like a Bosu ball (a half-dome inflatable on a platform) challenges your balance in a dynamic way. Standing or performing exercises on a Bosu ball forces your body to constantly adjust and maintain equilibrium. Start slowly and hold on to something for support initially.

By incorporating any of these activities into your daily routine, you can improve your balance and reduce your risk of falls.
