How do you oil barbells?

Published in Barbell Maintenance 3 mins read

Oiling a barbell involves applying lubricant to the sleeves and sometimes the shaft to maintain its performance and prevent rust. Here’s a breakdown of how to do it:

Why Oil a Barbell?

  • Reduce Friction: Oiling the sleeves ensures smooth rotation, which is crucial for exercises like cleans and snatches.
  • Prevent Rust: Oil creates a protective barrier against moisture, preventing rust formation, especially in humid environments.
  • Maintain Performance: Regular oiling keeps the barbell in optimal condition, extending its lifespan and performance.

Steps to Oil a Barbell

  1. Gather Your Supplies:

    • Brush: Use a nylon brush or a similar soft brush.
    • Lubricant: 3-IN-ONE oil or a similar light machine oil. Avoid WD-40 as it is more of a solvent than a lubricant.
    • Lint-Free Cloth: To wipe away excess oil.
    • Gloves: Optional, to keep your hands clean.
  2. Clean the Barbell:

    • Use a brush to remove any chalk, dirt, or debris from the barbell's shaft and sleeves.
  3. Apply Oil to the Sleeves:

    • Apply a small amount of 3-IN-ONE oil around the inner circumference where the sleeve meets the shaft. You'll want to leave a few inches (about 3") at the end of the bar exposed.
    • Rotate the sleeves to distribute the oil evenly.
    • Allow the oil to penetrate for a few minutes.
  4. Wipe Away Excess Oil:

    • Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe away any excess oil from the sleeves and shaft. This prevents oil from attracting more dirt and grime.
  5. Reassemble (if necessary):

    • If you disassembled any part of the barbell to clean it, reassemble it carefully, ensuring all components are properly aligned and tightened. You will need to return the bearing.

How Often to Oil

The frequency of oiling depends on how often you use the barbell and the environment it's stored in. A general guideline:

  • Regular Use (3-5 times per week): Oil every 1-3 months.
  • Occasional Use (1-2 times per week): Oil every 3-6 months.
  • Humid Environments: Oil more frequently, as moisture can accelerate rust.

Important Considerations:

  • Type of Oil: Use a light machine oil.
  • Avoid Over-Oiling: Too much oil can attract dirt and reduce the barbell's performance.
  • Storage: Store the barbell horizontally to prevent oil from pooling in one area.

By following these steps, you can properly oil your barbell, ensuring its longevity and smooth performance.
