Bee diseases can be caused by:

  • Bacteria: Like Paenibacillus larvae, the cause of American Foulbrood (AFB).
  • Fungi: Such as chalkbrood.
  • Viruses: A wide range of viruses affect bees, including deformed wing virus (DWV).
  • Parasites: Varroa mites are a major parasite affecting bee health.
  • Pests: Other pests like small hive beetles can also contribute to disease.

American Foulbrood (AFB) as an Example

American Foulbrood is a highly contagious and devastating disease that specifically targets honey bee larvae.

How AFB Works:

  1. Infection: Larvae ingest Paenibacillus larvae spores through contaminated food.
  2. Multiplication: The spores germinate in the gut of the larvae, multiplying rapidly.
  3. Death: The bacteria kill the larvae within the brood cell.
  4. Spread: The dead larvae become a source of infection, spreading the disease to other larvae within the colony and potentially to other colonies.

Impact of Bee Diseases

Bee diseases, like AFB, can significantly weaken or even destroy bee colonies. This has serious consequences for:

  • Honey production: Diseased colonies produce less honey.
  • Pollination: Reduced bee populations negatively impact pollination of crops and wild plants.
  • Beekeeping industry: Beekeepers face economic losses due to colony mortality and the cost of disease management.
