How Do You Harvest Beet Seeds?

Published in Beet Seed Harvesting 2 mins read

Beet seed harvesting involves a two-step process: ripening and extraction.

Ripening the Beet Seeds

After the beet's first year of growth, allow the plant to overwinter. In the second season, wait until the beet greens completely turn brown. This signals maturity. Then, carefully cut off the top 4 inches of the plant. Store these cut tops in a cool, dry place for four weeks to ensure the seeds fully ripen. This crucial drying period allows the seeds to mature properly for optimal germination later.

Extracting the Beet Seeds

Once the four-week drying period is complete, you can extract the seeds in two ways:

  1. Stripping: Gently strip the seeds from the dried foliage. This method works best with smaller quantities. This process requires patience and careful handling to avoid damaging the seeds.

  2. Pounding: Place the dried beet tops in a bag and gently pound them to release the seeds. This is more efficient for larger quantities. Ensure that you don't pound too forcefully, as this might damage the seeds.

Both methods yield viable beet seeds ready for planting the following season. Remember to clean the harvested seeds to remove any debris before storage.
