Who is Called a Child of God?

Published in Biblical Interpretation 2 mins read

The term "child of God" has two intertwined, but distinct, meanings: all of humanity as creations of God, and those who have a specific relationship with God through faith.

Humanity as Creations of God

In a broad sense, all people are considered children of God because we are all created in His image.

  • Created in God's Image: Genesis 1:27 states, "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." This verse suggests a inherent connection between God and humanity, making every person valuable and precious.
  • Universal Love: God's love extends to all people, regardless of their beliefs or actions. This universal love further supports the idea that all humans are, in a sense, His children.

Believers with a Relationship with God

However, the Bible also indicates a more specific meaning for "child of God," referring to those who have a personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ.

  • Separation by Sin: The short answer references the idea that sin separates humanity from God.
  • Adoption through Faith: John 1:12 states, "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." This signifies that becoming a "child of God" in the fullest sense involves receiving Jesus Christ and believing in Him. This verse highlights the transformative power of faith in establishing this distinct relationship.
  • A New Identity: Those who believe are adopted into God's family and receive a new identity as His children (Romans 8:14-17). This adoption brings with it privileges and responsibilities, including the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the inheritance of eternal life.

Summary

Therefore, while all people are children of God by virtue of creation, a deeper relationship as a child of God is established through faith in Jesus Christ. This faith brings forgiveness of sins and adoption into God's family.
