How Do You Put a Pump on a Schrader Valve?

Published in Bicycle Maintenance 1 min read

Putting a pump on a Schrader valve is a straightforward process. Here's how you do it:

  1. Attach the Pump Head: Place the pump head (the part that connects to the valve) squarely over the Schrader valve. Make sure it's pushed on far enough to create a good seal.

  2. Engage the Lever (if applicable): Many pump heads have a lever. If yours does, flip the lever to the open (unlocked) position before attaching to the valve, then flip it closed (locked) once the pump head is securely on the valve. This lever secures the connection and prevents air leakage.

  3. Inflate: Start pumping until you reach the desired pressure (or the recommended pressure indicated on the tire/item).

  4. Disengage the Lever (if applicable): If your pump has a lever, flip it back to the open (unlocked) position.

  5. Remove the Pump Head: Pull the pump head straight off the Schrader valve.

  6. Replace the Valve Cap: Screw the valve cap back onto the Schrader valve. This protects the valve from dirt and debris.
