How Do You Use a PSI Bike Pump?

Published in Bike Maintenance 2 mins read

To use a PSI bike pump effectively, clean the valve stem, securely attach the pump head, and then pump until you reach your desired tire pressure (PSI).

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  1. Prepare the Valve: Start by cleaning any dirt or debris from the tire valve stem and valve cap. Remove the valve cap and set it aside in a safe place.

  2. Attach the Pump Head: The type of pump head will vary slightly depending on the pump and valve type (Presta or Schrader).

    • Schrader Valves: These are common on car tires and some bikes. Press the pump nozzle straight onto the valve. You may hear a small amount of air escaping as it seats properly. Some Schrader pump heads have a lever to secure the connection; ensure this lever is in the open position before attaching, and then close it to lock onto the valve.
    • Presta Valves: These have a small nut at the tip. Unscrew this nut to open the valve before attaching the pump. After inflating, screw the nut back down. Presta valves are narrower than Schrader valves. Again, ensure any lever on the pump head is properly engaged to create a secure seal.
  3. Pump: With the pump head securely attached, begin pumping. Use a smooth, full stroke. For floor pumps, place one foot on each side of the pump's base to stabilize it.

  4. Monitor Pressure: Many floor pumps have a built-in pressure gauge. Monitor the gauge as you pump to ensure you don't over-inflate. The recommended PSI for your tires is usually printed on the sidewall of the tire.

  5. Detach and Secure: Once you reach the desired PSI, carefully detach the pump head. Re-tighten the Presta valve nut (if applicable) and replace the valve cap on either type of valve.
