How to Install a Seatpost Shim?

Published in Bike Maintenance 2 mins read

Installing a seatpost shim involves fitting a sleeve (the shim) inside your bike's frame to adapt it to a smaller diameter seatpost. Here's how:

  1. Determine Compatibility: Ensure you have the correct shim size. This means matching the inner diameter of the shim to your seatpost's outer diameter and the outer diameter of the shim to your frame's seat tube inner diameter.
  2. Prepare the Frame: Clean the inside of your frame's seat tube. Remove any dirt, debris, or old grease. A clean surface ensures a proper fit.
  3. Grease (or Carbon Paste):
    • Metal Shims & Metal Seatposts: Apply a thin layer of grease to the outside of the shim. This helps it slide into the frame and prevents creaking.
    • Carbon Seatposts: If you're using a carbon seatpost, use carbon paste instead of grease between the seatpost and the shim. This provides grip without damaging the carbon. Grease might cause the carbon fiber to slip.
  4. Insert the Shim: Carefully slide the shim into the seat tube of your frame. It should fit snugly, but not be forced.
  5. Insert the Seatpost: Slide your seatpost into the shim. Make sure it goes in smoothly. Again, avoid forcing it.
  6. Adjust Seatpost Height and Tighten: Set your seatpost to the desired height. Tighten the seatpost clamp to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification. Using a torque wrench prevents overtightening and potential damage to the frame or seatpost.
