How to Use Engine Oil for a Bike?

Published in Bike Maintenance 3 mins read

Using engine oil for your bike involves adding new oil during a routine oil change to keep the engine lubricated and running smoothly. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Consult Your Manual: Refer to your bike's maintenance booklet to determine the correct type and amount of engine oil needed. This is crucial for optimal performance and to prevent damage.

  2. Gather Supplies: You'll need:

    • New engine oil (correct type and quantity)
    • Measuring beaker or container
    • Funnel
    • Wrench or socket to remove the oil drain plug
    • Oil drain pan
    • New oil filter (recommended with each oil change)
    • Rags or shop towels
  3. Drain the Old Oil:

    • Warm up the engine slightly (a few minutes) to make the oil flow more easily. Do not overheat the engine.
    • Position the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug.
    • Locate the oil drain plug (usually on the bottom of the engine).
    • Use the wrench or socket to carefully remove the drain plug. Be prepared for the hot oil to flow out.
    • Allow the old oil to drain completely.
  4. Replace the Oil Filter:

    • While the oil is draining, remove the old oil filter.
    • Lightly lubricate the rubber gasket of the new oil filter with fresh oil.
    • Screw the new oil filter into place by hand until it's snug. Do not overtighten.
  5. Reinstall the Drain Plug:

    • Clean the drain plug and replace the crush washer (if applicable).
    • Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque (check your manual). Do not overtighten.
  6. Add New Oil:

    • Refer to your manual for the exact amount of oil required.
    • Use the measuring beaker to measure out the correct amount of oil.
    • Locate the engine oil filler cap (usually marked with an oil can symbol).
    • Remove the filler cap.
    • Insert the funnel into the filler hole.
    • Carefully pour the new engine oil into the engine.
  7. Check the Oil Level:

    • Replace the filler cap.
    • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
    • Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle.
    • Check the oil level using the dipstick (if equipped) or the sight glass. The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Add more oil if necessary to reach the correct level.
  8. Dispose of Old Oil Properly: Take the used oil to a recycling center or auto parts store for proper disposal.

By following these steps, you can effectively use engine oil to maintain your bike's engine and ensure its longevity.
