Bile salts are primarily destroyed in the large intestine by bacteria.
While bile salts are recycled multiple times a day through a process called enterohepatic circulation, small amounts escape absorption and reach the large intestine. According to the reference material, this happens about 10 to 12 times a day. In the large intestine, bacteria break down these escaped bile salts.
