How many conditional amino acids are there?

Published in Biochemistry 1 min read

There are two conditionally essential amino acids.

Conditionally essential amino acids are those that the body can typically synthesize on its own. However, during times of illness, stress, or growth, the body's ability to produce these amino acids may be impaired. In these situations, they become "essential" and must be obtained from the diet.

The two conditionally essential amino acids are:

  • Arginine: Often required during periods of rapid growth, trauma, and certain illnesses.
  • Taurine: Important for neurological development and function. While humans can synthesize it, supplementation may be beneficial in specific situations.
