How to Measure Homemade Blinds

Published in Blind Measurement Guide 3 mins read

Measuring for homemade blinds is a straightforward process, but the very first step is crucial as it determines how you take all subsequent measurements. Getting this initial decision right ensures your blinds fit and function correctly.

Based on the process for roller blinds, the first step before measuring your windows is deciding whether you want your blinds to sit on the inside of the window frames as a recess fit, or on the outside of the frame as a face fit.

Step 1: Choose Your Blind Fit Type

Your choice of fit type significantly impacts how and what you measure.

  • Recess Fit: The blind is installed inside the window frame or reveal. When finished, the blind will sit neatly within the opening. This provides a clean, integrated look.
  • Face Fit: The blind is installed outside the window frame, either on the wall above the window or on the frame itself. This option allows for better light blockage around the edges and can make a window appear larger.

Step 2: Take Accurate Measurements

Once you've decided on your fit type, you'll need a metal tape measure and a pen and paper to record your findings. Always measure in the units you plan to use for construction (e.g., centimeters or inches).

For a Recess Fit

Measure the exact inside dimensions of your window reveal. Do not make any deductions yourself; this is often done by the blind maker (or you will need to factor it in during construction).

  • Width: Measure the width of the window reveal in at least three places: top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest measurement. This ensures your blind doesn't get stuck if the opening isn't perfectly square.
  • Height: Measure the height from the top of the reveal to the windowsill (or bottom of the reveal) in at least three places: left, middle, and right. Use the smallest measurement. This prevents the blind from dragging.

For a Face Fit

Measure the area you want the blind to cover outside the window frame.

  • Width: Measure the desired finished width of your blind. This should typically extend equally on both sides beyond the window frame or reveal to minimize light gaps. Consider aesthetics and ensure the blind clears any obstacles like handles.
  • Height: Measure the desired finished height of your blind. This usually goes from the desired mounting point above the window down to where you want the blind to finish, often below the windowsill. Again, consider any obstructions.

Step 3: Record Your Measurements

It's essential to clearly label and double-check all your measurements. A simple table can be helpful:

Measurement Type Fit Type Measurement 1 Measurement 2 Measurement 3 Measurement to Use Notes (e.g., Unit)
Width Recess Fit Smallest
Height Recess Fit Smallest
Width Face Fit Desired Width
Height Face Fit Desired Height

Remember that these are the dimensions you will use to cut your fabric and construct your blind, potentially factoring in deductions for recess fit or additions for seam allowances depending on your specific blind pattern.
