What You'll Need

Published in Blinds Installation 4 mins read

Installing outside mount vertical blinds involves affixing the headrail brackets to the wall or trim outside the window frame, then attaching the headrail and hanging the individual fabric or vinyl pieces. The portion of the vertical blind that rotates is called a vein, and the design typically makes it easy to install the veins onto the headrail carriers.

Here is a step-by-step guide for installing outside mount vertical blinds:

Before you begin, ensure you have the necessary tools and materials:

  • Vertical blind kit (including headrail, veins, brackets, screws, and controls)
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Drill
  • Drill bits (appropriate size for pilot holes)
  • Screwdriver (or drill bit attachment)
  • Safety glasses
  • Optional: Wall anchors (if drilling into drywall without a stud)

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Follow these steps carefully to install your outside mount vertical blinds:

Step 1: Prepare and Measure

Unpack your vertical blinds and check that all parts are present and undamaged. Lay out the headrail and components. Confirm your window measurements match the blind size you ordered. Determine exactly where you want the blinds to sit outside the window frame – considering coverage and clearance.

Step 2: Mark Bracket Locations

Hold the headrail up to the desired position above the window frame, centered or aligned as planned. Use a level to ensure it is straight. Mark the intended locations for the mounting brackets on the wall or trim using a pencil. Typically, brackets are placed near the ends of the headrail and potentially one or two in the middle for wider blinds, following the manufacturer's instructions. Use the bracket itself as a template to mark the screw hole positions.

Step 3: Install Mounting Brackets

Using your drill, create pilot holes at the marked screw locations. If drilling into drywall without hitting a stud, insert appropriate wall anchors according to their instructions. Position each bracket over the pilot holes or anchors and secure it firmly with the provided screws using your drill or screwdriver. Ensure the brackets are aligned and level.

Step 4: Attach the Headrail

With the brackets securely installed, lift the headrail and position it correctly to attach to the brackets. Depending on the bracket type, you might slide the headrail in or clip it into place. Once the headrail is seated, secure it using any locking mechanisms or screws provided with the brackets. Make sure the headrail is firmly attached and level.

Step 5: Install the Veins

Now it's time to hang the individual vertical slats or veins. The portion of the vertical blind that rotates is called a vein to make it easy to install the veins. Typically, there are carriers along the bottom of the headrail's track. Rotate the carriers so their openings are facing the same direction. Take each vein and insert its punched hole or slot onto the hook or pin of a carrier. They usually click or slide into place. Work your way across the headrail until all veins are hung.

Step 6: Add Controls and Finish

Attach the control wand or chain/cord mechanism to the headrail or the lead carrier as per the manufacturer's instructions. Test the blinds by rotating the veins open and closed and traversing them across the track. Ensure smooth operation. Make any final adjustments and clean up the installation area.

Proper installation ensures your vertical blinds function correctly and enhance your space.
