Platelets are smaller than red blood cells (RBCs).
Understanding Blood Cell Sizes
Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, are the most abundant type of blood cell. Platelets, or thrombocytes, are much smaller cell fragments. In fact, platelets are only about 20% of the diameter of a red blood cell. [Source: Multiple sources including "Platelets are only about 20% of the diameter of red blood cells." (OUHSC, 2015) and "Platelets, the smallest of our blood cells..." (Johns Hopkins Medicine)].
While platelets are numerous, their small size means they contribute a tiny fraction to overall blood volume. A normal platelet count is much higher than the number of red blood cells, but their smaller size results in a significantly smaller overall volume.
