Who Should Not Donate Blood?

Published in Blood Donation Eligibility 3 mins read

Many factors influence blood donation eligibility. Individuals with certain medical conditions, recent health events, or high-risk behaviors should not donate blood. This ensures both donor and recipient safety.

Medical Conditions that Prevent Blood Donation

Several health conditions can disqualify someone from donating blood. These include but are not limited to:

  • Infectious diseases: People with active infections like the flu, cold, or any other infection, Chagas Disease, or Leishmaniasis should not donate. Those who have tested positive for HIV or have had contact with someone who has should also defer donation. (Red Cross Blood Services, Giving = Living, Indiana-Blood-Donation-Education.pdf).
  • Chronic illnesses: Individuals with conditions such as sickle cell disease, cancer, or HIV may be ineligible or require consultation with the blood donation center. (Health conditions)
  • Recent medical procedures: Those who've received a blood transfusion within the last three months are typically ineligible. (Health conditions, Giving = Living)

High-Risk Behaviors and Medications

Certain behaviors and medications can also impact eligibility:

  • Recent tattoos or piercings: While generally not a disqualifying factor if from a licensed establishment, recent procedures may necessitate a deferral period. (Mayo Clinic)
  • High-risk sexual activity: Individuals who have engaged in sex for money or drugs or have had a new sexual partner should consult the donation center for eligibility guidelines. (Merck Manual, Blood.ca)
  • Medication use: Some medications may temporarily disqualify individuals. Consult your physician and the donation center. (MD Anderson Cancer Center)

Feeling unwell? Don't donate!

Even if you don't have a specific condition, do not donate if you feel unwell. This includes symptoms like a cold, flu, sore throat, or upset stomach. Prioritizing your health is crucial. (WHO, New York Blood Center)
