What blood type is called baby blood?

Published in Blood Transfusion 1 min read

The term "baby blood" refers to CMV-negative blood when needed for transfusions in infants.

When babies, especially premature infants, require blood transfusions, doctors often prefer to use blood that is negative for Cytomegalovirus (CMV). CMV is a common virus that usually causes mild or no symptoms in healthy adults. However, it can be dangerous for babies with underdeveloped immune systems. Transfusing CMV-negative blood minimizes the risk of CMV infection in these vulnerable infants. Therefore, while not a specific blood type like A, B, AB, or O, CMV-negative blood is often informally called "baby blood" in this context.
