What is 2M PHY?

Published in Bluetooth Technology 2 mins read

2M PHY, or 2 Megabit PHY, is a physical layer (PHY) configuration introduced in Bluetooth 5.0. It significantly improves Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) performance by doubling the data rate to 2 Mbps (megabits per second) compared to the standard 1M PHY's 1 Mbps. This faster data rate translates to quicker data transfers and reduced connection time. The increased speed is achieved through changes in data modulation within the PHY itself, while maintaining the same transmit power as the 1M PHY. Consequently, devices using 2M PHY can achieve lower energy consumption because the radio needs less time to transmit the same amount of data.

However, it's crucial to note that the 2M PHY mode needs to be negotiated between two connected devices; both devices must support this feature. The transition from 1M to 2M PHY occurs after a connection is established, through an exchange of parameters. This ensures compatibility with devices that do not support 2M PHY. It’s not a simple update; it requires mutual agreement and capability between the communicating devices.

Key Features and Benefits of 2M PHY:

  • Faster Data Rate: Doubles the data rate to 2 Mbps, enabling quicker data transfers.
  • Reduced Energy Consumption: Less time spent transmitting data leads to improved battery life.
  • Improved Latency: Faster data transmission reduces delays in data communication.
  • Bluetooth 5.0 and Above: Requires Bluetooth 5.0 or later versions for support.
  • Negotiation Required: Both communicating devices must support and agree upon the 2M PHY mode after establishing a connection.
